Secondary Content Research

This Morning - ITV

Having carried out some primary research in creating questionnaires and filming interviews, I will now look at some secondary research which will give me further detail into the beauty world and in particular the make-up industry. Here is a clip from the ITV show 'This Morning' showing a  debate between two females, about make-up and its importance. The two sides are very much separated in opinions and from watching the clip, I can see why there are two sides to an argument about make-up. This is because I would say I agree more with one of the ladies more than the other, not because the points she is making are correct but rather because, for me, their argument weighs more and I find it more understandable.
The debate is about the use of make-up and how it may or may not be important. The first lady called 'Rebecca' who is a businesswomen says that make-up is important for women to wear because ''it's all about the image that you portray, and what you put out there, and the fact that it shows that you actually put effort into the way that you look. On the other hand, Shona Sibary who says that ''no woman should feel that they have to wear make-up, or that they are disadvantaged in someway professionally if they choose not to wear make-up, like me , it's never disadvantaged me''. Although, these arguments are both valid and very far apart, there are still areas where I can see some convergence. For example, both women agree that make-up should or can be worn to enhance one's self-esteem. They also make a similar point that wearing too much make-up can sometimes give a wrong impression.

Vogue

Another piece of secondary research which I have looked into is the only vogue magazines. This is a good source for researching into the beauty industry because it is a company that is centered around beauty and fashion. I have looked into various cover pages for vogue's make-up magazine, and to the right are the ones which I thought looked most appealing and that I could analyse the most. Firstly, the image to the right shows a woman with ginger hair, wearing a heavy coat of make-up , including the exaggerated eyeshadow on the eyes and the berry coloured lipstick. This is clearly a lot on one face and wouldn't be worn as an 'every day' look. However, I think vogue have purposely enhanced her facial features using make-up to show women that they can apply make-up liberally and not have to worry about whether it is too much or not. As we can see from the model, her eyeshadow colour is one which not many people wear or particularly go for. Wearing bold make-up colours is something that I hope to include in my make-up (lipstick) advert.

The next image shows another one of vogues magazine covers with the actress Emma Watson as the model. This time however the make-up is slightly toned down, and although she has on quite a bold coloured lipstick, it does not take away from the overall natural feel of the make-up look. This is the make-up style we're looking to have our cast members have, where the lipstick is what stands out the most compared to the rest of the face. Additionally, we may need to look through some make-up adverts from professional brands to see how the girls on there are posing so that we can mimic this into our cosmetics advert.
It is often uncommon to see a male in a make-up advert, especially when they're the main cast member who is wearing the make-up. I have looked into some beauty bloggers and have found one who goes by the name of ''Jeffree Star'' and particularly stood out to me. Jeffree is 31 years of age and is a well established singer/songwriter , make-up artist and fashion designer. His work in the beauty industry with make-up has now reached shop shelves. Apart from the success that Jeffree has made out of all his work, it is rare that you find a man wearing make-up and embracing it truly whilst in an advert. This is displayed by the video to the right where we see Jeffree in a professional make-up advert production, promoting his lipstick range, all whilst wearing different coloured lipsticks, wigs, contact lenses and costumes. This, although may seem odd or off trend, is actually grabbing the attention of the audience as it is something new and fresh which they have never seen anything like before.
